Devlog 9: Can we reach the finish line, like our snails?

Like promised last week, here is an updated view of our recap gif, here you can take a small peek at our entire development process.

Bridge and Finish

As you could maybe tell from the video you just saw, we finally replaced the finish line and bridges with new and improved models! Take a closer look!


More Particles!

We also added a bunch more particles, or reused pre-existing ones in new places. Sometimes to help new players understand what is happening, and for some just for aesthetics. 

 

As you can see here, we now have colourful splash particles in the same colour as the potion you use. A small arrow indicator where to use your potion. We also added some particles for certain potion effects, like speed up, speed down and more. Finally we added some speech bubble type particles, when your snail stops. These will tell the player what is required to resume moving.

Programming Stuff

Final step off the sprint, all comes together to bring our immersive game to live. We start the game now in our main menu, playing a smooth sound while you can go through the controls or view a short explanation about the game. And then we GO!

We added more sound and effects for playerfeedback and we started to keep a score. Every dash, every potion you make will be counted. Off course , every time your brew fails or you fall in to the water will be counted as well. We also added the avg speed off your snail at the end, giving you something to improve in later games. So now it is time to keep playing and increase your potion brewing skills.

We made this easier to do through menus. At the end off the game, you get the possibility to go back to main menu and restart the game. Now the randomise potions will be at his full power, are you lucky this time? No worries, just kick the other guy in the river and steal his stuff. This is also part off becoming the greatest potion brewer off the snail world.

Of course sometimes you need a little break. So we introduced a pause menu.
